SCENE DESIGN
Scene Design is a professional, artistic, curatorial, and theoretical-critical practice that emerged from the expansion of the concept and field of scenography. The term was introduced into the Serbian language to describe an integrated process of conceiving, creating, and realizing the stage image in theatre and other forms of spectacle.
In theatre, Scene Design encompasses various areas of stage creation —scene architecture, technology, scenography, and the design of all elements that constitute an image on the stage. As a distinct artistic and curatorial discipline, Scene Design belongs to the interdisciplinary field where architecture, theatre, and visual arts intersect. In Serbia, Scene Design first emerged as a comprehensive system of study programs at all three educational levels — undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
WHICH PROGRAMS ARE AVAILABLE?
Since 2013, the Faculty of Technical Sciences has offered Scene Design programs at all three levels of higher education — undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral studies. All study programs are interdisciplinary and span the fields of technical and technological sciences and the arts (undergraduate and master’s studies), as well as different areas within the arts (master’s and doctoral studies). The programs are designed as a space to exchange ideas, experiences, and approaches, and as a place where theory and practice in scene architecture, technology, and design come together. The studies foster teamwork while also encouraging an independent authorial approach to creative work. Since 2020, students have been able to enroll in the four-year undergraduate academic program Scene Architecture, Technology and Design, which is predominantly engineering-oriented. Upon completing their undergraduate studies, students can enroll in one-year master’s studies in one of two programs: Scene Architecture and Technique and Scene Architecture and Design. Scene Architecture and Technique master’s program is intended for candidates who wish to pursue the engineering aspects of Scene Design, while the Scene Architecture and Design program is intended for candidates who see their professional future in Scene Design as an art form and in designing scene space. The Scene Design doctoral program lasts three years, is situated within the field of arts, and represents the highest level of education in this field in Serbia and the region.
